I was asked to Illustrate a flower shop so I began with sketches of a quaint shop featuring a lady and a young girl surrounded by flowers. However, I wanted to offer a unique and unexpected perspective. Embracing storytelling with contrast, I played with the notions of big and small, old and young, and ‘scary’ vs light-hearted. I was inspired by Little Shop of Horrors and Mario’s piranha plants. I created this illustration featuring a boy holding a giant monstrous plant with an old man caring for a young monster plant in the background. I love to empower children through my art, and I aimed to do that with this illustration by depicting a child confidently befriending something that may seem scary because it’s different. The original illustration was created with acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, and inks on illustration board, with digital touchups after scanning.
